What is Social Media Day?

Started by Mashable 4 years ago, #SMDay is a worldwide celebration that takes place on 30th June each year. Social Media has changed our lives both in how we do business and how we socialize. @SMDayOttawa wants to bring our Social Media friends together from around the world.

Here is what the Founders at Mashable have to say:

“We’re thrilled to celebrate Mashable’s fourth annual Social Media Day! We launched the event in 2010 as a way to recognize the digital revolution happening right before our eyes. We invite you to join fellow social media enthusiasts by hosting or attending a Social Media Day Meetup in your area.”

We had a successful event for Social Media Day Ottawa in 2012 and we’re doing it again!

His honour Deputy Mayor Steve Desroches twill open our event as the official MC, to declare June 30 ‘Social Media Day in Ottawa.

Our city being well-versed in the use of social media, is a great example of how municipal government can utilize the social channels to keep our citizens in the loop.

To show social media is a vital part of any marketing plan and also can be a useful tool for multiple generations, we will be including residents of the retirement residence, in the proposed hangout video conference, hoping to connect them with loved ones in other parts of the world.

We’ve done hangouts with Chris Hadfield in the space station as well as the Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and Chester Nez, the last Navajo code talker (Photo attached) from WW2 and many others.

We will be discussing how best to use social media channels ‘Best Practices’ in Social and we will be using Google+ to connect through a live Hangout video chat with others around the world. We want to show that social is viable for all generations!
